The Perfection Trap

Why Striving Harder is Keeping You Stuck

by Adena DeLillo

Have you ever ended a day completely exhausted — and still felt like you hadn't done enough?

You checked the boxes. You showed up for everyone. You pushed through the fatigue, the doubt, the quiet voice inside that whispered: "You need a break." And yet, as your head hit the pillow, the list for tomorrow was already forming in your mind.

Friend, that's not drive. That's the perfection trap — and it's exhausting.

Perfectionism Wears Many Disguises

It doesn't always look like a spotless house, employee of the month, or color-coded calendars. Sometimes perfectionism looks like:

  • Never feeling quite ready to take the next step

  • Saying yes when everything in you is screaming no

  • Replaying conversations, decisions, and mistakes long after they're over

  • Believing that your value is tied to your productivity

Sound familiar?

Here's What Nobody Tells You

Striving harder doesn't silence the inner critic — it feeds it. The more you perform, the louder the voice becomes. And somewhere along the way, you stop asking "what do I need?" and start asking "what more can I do?"

That shift is costing you more than you know.

There is Another Way

What if instead of striving for perfection, you pursued progress? What if the most courageous thing you did today was simply to be honest about where you are — and trust that God meets you right there?

"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." — Hebrews 6:19

You were never meant to hold it all together on your own. You were meant to be anchored.

This is exactly the work I do with women in coaching — gently dismantling the perfection trap and replacing it with a framework for progressive, grace-filled growth that honors your mind, your body, and your soul.
